Schedule a Meetup on Meetup.com

Scheduling a Meetup on Meetup.com is not
as obvious as I'd like it to be. Here
are the steps I'm now following to do
so:

  1. Log into the main page of the meetup group
    you are an administrator for
  2. Look for the menu at the top of
    the page
  3. Find the word Home on the far
    left side of the menu
  4. Find the words Group Tools on
the far right side of the menu. You may
have to scroll if you've set your browser
    to a larger font
  5. Hover over Group Tools so
that a drop down menu appears
  6. Look for Schedule a Meetup
    on the drop down menu
  7. Click on Schedule a Meetup
  8. Schedule a Meetup by filling
    in all the blanks

I write these things down so that
I do not forget. It pays to be
well organized!

Logging Into the Meetup.com
Home Page Fails Under Linux

I've been having trouble logging into
Meetup.com. It seems that when I try
to log into their home page. It doesn't
work right.

I'm using the Gnome Web Browser 2.22.3.
First, I go to the Home page and I click
the login link in the upper right-hand
corner. Next, my username and password
appear briefly pre-filled for me.

I then click login. (The word
login appears as a button just
below the pre-filled username and password.)
When I click login with the mouse, the whole
thing disappears before I can click anything
else. Now I find myself back at the Home page
again. I can repeat this cycle endlessly.

I have a different experience when I log into
Meetup.com from a specific meetup group. I'm able
to login just fine as long as I use the web page
of a specific meetup group and not the general
Meetup.com home page.

I'm still trying to figure this one out.

The same thing happens when I follow the same
steps with Iceweasel/3.0.6. That's two browsers
that are giving me the same problem.

On the other hand, Konqueror: 3.5.9 seems to work
just fine. All of the above browsers are under
Debian Linux Lenny.

After trying this under Linus, I reboot into
Windows. I first try Internet Explorer 8. It
works just fine.

Internet Explorer 8 is happy to login from the
Home page. It takes me to the Home page but it
is an alternative home page. It's a news feed that
is specific to me. After logging in, the home page
becomes a personal news feed of sorts.

Here is how this page is described by the Meetup
help system:

This is an activity feed from across all your Meetup
Groups. You'll see new members, new RSVPs, new
check-ins, your greetings, photo uploads, photo
comments and photos you've been tagged in. You'll
also see message board discussions if your group
has them turned on.

More items coming soon!

OK. I've just tried logging into the Home page
of Meetup.com using Google Chrome. Same thing.
It takes me to my own personal news feed. That
is to say, it seems to be feeding me news from
all the meetup groups that I belong to.

Mozilla Firefox does the same thing. Again, I've
logged in from the Home page of Meetup.com. Again
I get a newsfeed for all the Meetup groups that I
belong to.

Safari under Windows behaves like Internet Explorer
and Chrome. It also takes me to my own personal
newsfeed for the meetup groups I belong to.

I'm beginning to see a pattern here. The first thing
I see is that I only have this problem under Linux.

The seoond thing I notice is that this problem is basically
a password authentication problem. It is a password
authentication problem in the sense that it only happens
when I'm asked for a password.

I've learned something new today. In thinking back I
realize that the only time I've ever had problems
with password authentication under Linux is when I
use one browser as opposed to another. In other words,
some browsers authenticate just fine. Others have
problems.

The frustrating part is that the same browser does
not seem to work across all websites. On some websites,
one Linux browser does the trick. On other websites, it
is another Linux browser.

I think I'll give up on this problem for now. Basically
it is a problem under Linux only. Perhaps I need to do
all my Meetup postings under Windows only. Maybe that
is the answer.
